There and Back Again

No person will be a sailor who has contrivance enough to get themself into a jail; for being in a ship is being in a jail, with the chance of being drowned… a person in a jail has more room, better food, and commonly better company.
—Samuel Johnson

Happy Mother’s Day everyone! Although I’m missing Colleen on this Mother’s Day and remembering all the breakfasts-in-bed and dinners to celebrate, I’m also happy to say that we completed our 1,050 mile passage home by entering the Hillsboro Inlet at 4:45 AM this morning and hailing the bridge tender on the radio to request an opening of its span for us. Between exiting the West End, Tortola, BVI harbor and entering Hillsboro Inlet, we did not use our diesel engine “Ox” once, that was a goal of mine achieved.

More to follow as I think through the passage and put it all in context—10 1/2 days of single handed sailing takes a lot out of you to say the least. For now, I just want you to know that we are in the safe harbor of home and I’m looking forward to my first sleep off of Hazel in more than 100 nights.

Thanks as always for your emotional, spiritual and—sometimes—meteorological support of the voyage.
